Question - Monday

Each day, Monday to Thursday there will be one tricky question for you to answer.  The answer will be a number.

Students will need to record their daily answers.

On Friday, students can submit their Super Challenge daily answers, and the total of the daily answers, and submit them online.

If this total is correct, they will get a link to a page where they can fill in their name and school. Students can then print out their Maths Week Super Challenge

Certificate. The student’s school will also get a notification of their success.

If the total is incorrect, a message comes up to tell the student. The student can then go back, change an answer, and re-submit it. If the total is then correct, the student will get the Maths Week Super Challenge Certificate.

The answers to the Super Challenge questions will be available to teachers after the end of Maths Week.

Monday

In the Wimbledon tennis tournament, there are five main events – the men’s singles, the ladies’ singles, the men’s doubles, the ladies’ doubles, and the mixed doubles. (There are events in addition to the main events – the junior tournament and the invitation tournament. In this question, we will be concerned with the main events only.)

Each event is a knock-out event – the winning player or pair progresses to the next round, and the losing player or pair is “knocked out” of the tournament. In each of the men’s singles and ladies’ singles there are seven rounds of games (the last round is the final), in each of the men’s doubles and ladies’ doubles there are six rounds of games, and in the mixed doubles there are five rounds of games.

If no-one withdraws, for example through injury, and all games are played, how many games are played in total in the Wimbledon main events?
